How many of you eat with Dalits? Ashok Gehlot attacks Modi govt over SC/ST reservation

Rajasthan CM Ashok Gehlot and other senior Congress leaders staged a protest near the collectorate in Jaipur and targeted the Modi government over reservation for Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes. Gehlot asked what has the BJP and RSS ever done to end untouchability.

Gehlot targeted the BJP and said, “Today they are attacking Muslims, tomorrow they will come for the Sikhs and Buddhs. What do these people want? I want that there dream of Hindu Rashtra is never fulfilled. To those talking about the Hindu Rashtra, I will say, is Scheduled Caste not Hindu? Did you ever try to end untouchability? How many of your family sit with them to eat food?”

The Supreme Court has recently held that states are not bound to provide reservation in appointments and there is no fundamental right to claim quota in promotions.

Apart from Gehlot, Deputy Chief Minister Sachin Pilot, state Congress in-charge Avinash Pande were also present at the protest against Centre.

Gehlot hit out at the Narendra Modi-led central government saying they had been making anti-reservation sounds.

“The decisions taken by the AICC chief Sonia Gandhi and Rahul Gandhi to take the workers of the entire country along, everyone from SC, ST, OBC and economically backward gave them 10% reservation,” said Ashok Gehlot.

The Congress leader also claimed that those present at the agitation were real nationalists and that the nationalism pursued by the BJP leaders was pseudo-nationalism.

Gehlot asked the beneficiaries of reservation to come forward and show unity so as to prevent the government from bringing an end to reservation.

“Those people come forward to show unity, to protect this reservation, so that in future the central government does not have the courage to end reservation. The sound that is coming out from their statements, the threat that is there, I am disturbed to inform you. The Supreme Court also mentioned that the states will not be under pressure to give reservation in promotion, this is very dangerous,” said Ashok Gehlot.

He added, “Why can’t there be an amendment to ensure reservation in promotion that they should get what they deserve. This is being done in Rajasthan. By making Rajasthan a model, why does the central government not ensure that all states give reservation in promotion? That is the main issue towards which everyone should be focused,” Ashok Gehlot said.
